LEMMON Nelson

Nelson Lemmon recalls when the photo (below) was taken. From an Oral History interview held at the WA State Library. Nelson purchased a farm at Ongerup.

HON. NELSON LEMMON: I must have been about 21, just on 21, yea, forget when the election was, would be between 21 or 22, yea, and all the old boys were - I was looking for a photo of that.

I remember seeing a photo, we gave a presentation to an old chap by the name of Garnett, oh he'd been there for years and he was retiring for age, and we thought we'd give him a sort of Illuminated address, you know.

So we all lined up to get our photo taken, I'm President sitting in there. And I sent the thing to Dad, you know. And some years later when I was over there when I became a Minister, he's got it in his office, you know,

God I only looked a damn kid with all these old boys with beards, you know, this sort of amused me a bit.

And only the other, about a year ago, I thought damned if I'd like to get that to give it to my son, you know. And I wrote to my sister but she didn't know what happened to it, so that was that.

But that was the start then, that was, I only lasted two years, I got sick of it. You had to drive in, I got married then and you had a 35 mile rough road, an earth road, to meetings and then some bit of a brass hat would come and they would want to give him a dinner and, you know, the drive in and then come back late at night, and I got jack of it, it didn't appeal to me and I just threw it in”.

RON HURST (Interviewer): Did you think looking back at it that you achieved anything as Shire President?

Hon NELSON LEMMON: Well, during the period we did two things: built a new hospital which they've been battling for years, and there was a big, kids used to swim in a big pool, perpetual water used to flow out about that big all the time, down the hill into a sort of a billabong business and then it would then flow off into a creek, and this is where all the kids wanted. And so anyway some of the women came and said if we'd try to do something, and had a deputation to me. And I said "Well, now look I’ll ask the Board to go 50 percent if you'll raise 50 percent within 12 months", that's to the women. You run your, because your kids that were getting sore throats and all this in this aud and stuff.

So anyway they raised it in under 12 months, and the pool was built, we put wood all around like, not an expensive job, not much concrete, but made it so that it was a, put the scoops in and made it even all around, and it was quite a good job. Oh we had a big opening then, some of the top swimmers from Perth came down and demonstrated all the different styles. So there were two things in two years. I didn't reckon that was bad, a fair go, so I got out”.

RON HURST: And you married a local girl? Did you meet her there?

HON. NELSON LEMMON: Yes, married this local girl, yea, yea. Her father was the best farmer there, German stock from South Australia, a good farmer, a real good farmer, oh, hell of a hard worker, strong as a lion, yea, yea. I sheared at his place then for about three years, sheared his sheep, sheared my sheep, it must have been three or four years I was shearing wasn't it Love? Easy, yea, used to ride the push bike sometimes four miles there, shear all day and ride the bike back home at night, yea”.

(Nelson married Ada Jaekel)
